Ink cartridges manufactured by another producer than the brand name holder or licensee often have a slightly different construction than the original. This is to avoid breaching the increasing use of patent rights used in order to protect the profitable consumables market.
Compatible cartridges works best if the printer head is stationary [i.e. it is built in the printer]. For many models of Brother, Canon and Epson printers that use simple ink tanks there's really no point in buying the much more expensive original ink tanks.
Manufacturers of compatible cartridges have no cost for development of new printers. The factories are often located in Asia (China) and the cost of production is very low.
