Seiko Epson Corporation
(セイコーエプソン株式会社, Seikō Epuson Kabushiki-gaisha*)
When Seiko was selected as the official time keeper of the 64' Tokyo Olympics they had to invent a printing timer which now was required to time events. Four years later this led to the development of the EP-101 digital printer. From the name of the following generation printers (son of EP) sprung the brand name of the fast growing printer division - Epson.
Micro Piezo Inkjet
Piezo technology is built on a multi-layer print head. It was first introduced in the Epson Stylus 800 inkjet printer which reach the store shelves in March 1993. With the Piezo technology the ink is not heated as in bubblejet printers. This opens for a much larger variety of ink formulas. Since the printer head is stationary (i.e. built in the printer) it does not have to be replaced and the Epson ink cartridges contain only ink which substantially lowers the overall printout cost.
The Epson Stylus 800 was Epson's first inkjet printer aimed at home users. It was not only fast but offered a high resolution.
